Zijn eredienst was van alle goden het wijdst verspreid onder het Griekse volk en genoot het hoogste aanzien. Onder de verlatiniseerde naam Apollo is hij bekend geraakt in Rome. Door de Griekse dichters wordt hij meestal Phoibos Apollo genoemd. Apollo wordt ook wel als de vertegenwoordiger van rationele schoonheid en orde beschouwd, tegenover Dionysos, die de emotionele roes symboliseert.
