Ben Roy Mottelson

Ben Roy Mottelson was an American-Danish nuclear physicist and university teacher. Born in Chicago on July 9, 1926, he was educated at Harvard University and Purdue University. He served as a doctoral student of Julian Schwinger and later worked at the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics. Mottelson was a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the National Academy of Sciences, the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

He received the Nobel Prize in Physics and the Atoms for Peace Award. His work is recognized in the Nobel Laureates collection, the Nobel Physics collection, and the American Academy Arts Sciences collection. Mottelson spoke English and Danish. He died in Copenhagen on May 13, 2022, and was buried at Assistens Cemetery.
