Carlo Crivelli

Carlo Crivelli was an Italian painter born in Venice in 1430 and died in Ascoli Piceno in 1490. A male citizen of the Republic of Venice, he worked within the Gothic art movement and specialized in portrait and Renaissance painting. His professional activity spanned from 1450 to 1495. He studied under Francesco Squarcione and Jacobello del Fiore, and he taught Nicola Filotesio. His sibling was Vittore Crivelli.

Crivelli’s notable works include *Adoration of the Shepherds*, *The Annunciation, with Saint Emidius*, and *Madonna with Child*. His paintings are held in the collections of the Städel Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. He wrote in Italian, and his life and work have been described in sources such as the *Encyclopædia Britannica* 11th edition and *The Catholic Encyclopedia*.
