細胞分裂（さいぼうぶんれつ）とは、1つの細胞が2個以上の娘細胞に分かれる生命現象。核分裂とそれに引き続く細胞質分裂に分けてそれぞれ研究が進む。単細胞生物では細胞分裂が個体の増殖となる。多細胞生物では、受精卵以後の発生に伴う細胞分裂によって細胞数が増える。それらは厳密な制御機構に裏打ちされており、その異常はたとえばガン化を引き起こす。フィルヒョウは「細胞は細胞から生ず」と言ったと伝えられているが、これこそが細胞分裂を示している。
