Vanuit chemisch standpunt is chelatie hetzelfde als complexvorming, met dien verstande dat in de chemie het begrip complexvorming op mono-, di- en polydentaatliganden wordt toegepast, terwijl chelatie de monodentaatliganden expliciet uitsluit.
