Eugene Gladstone O'Neill (New York, 16 ottobre 1888 – Boston, 27 novembre 1953) è stato un drammaturgo statunitense. Insignito del premio Nobel per la letteratura nel 1936, O'Neill è stato una figura fondamentale per il teatro statunitense anche per il fatto che questo, a causa anche dell'ostracismo puritano contro gli spettacoli, era pressoché inesistente: O'Neill attinse strumenti, tecniche e idee da tutto il teatro europeo e usò e ricreò il coro e le maschere del teatro greco, le tecniche del melodramma e, soprattutto, quelle del realismo ibseniano, fuse con quelle dell'espressionismo di August Strindberg.
