断食(だんじき, 英語: Fasting)とは、自主的に飲食行為を断つこと。一定の期間、すべての食物あるいは特定の食物の摂取を絶つ宗教的行為。現代では絶食療法(一般にいう断食療法)として、医療行為ないし民間医療ともされている。固形物の食べ物を口にするのを止める行為であり、水すらも一切飲まない断食もある。「絶食」ともいう。 後述のラマダーンなど特定の意味を示す言葉として「断食」という言葉を使う場合もある。
