German is a modern language belonging to the West Germanic languages and High German subclasses. It is native to Germans and indigenous to Austria, the Karlovy Vary Region, and the Ústí nad Labem Region. The language is spoken in Germany, Austria, Belgium, and the Czech Republic. Its native label is Deutsch.

The language features a subject–object–verb and subject–verb–object typology with V2 word order. It is a nominative–accusative language with grammatical gender including masculine, feminine, and neuter forms. German utilizes the nominative, genitive, dative, and accusative cases, along with indicative, imperative, and subjunctive moods. Tenses include present, future, preterite, and perfect. Nouns are capitalized. The writing system comprises the German alphabet and German Braille.

Regulatory bodies include the Council for German Orthography and the Leibniz Institute for the German Language.
