Grammaticalization (also known as grammatization or grammaticization) is a linguistic process in which words change from representing objects or actions to serving grammatical functions. Grammaticalization can involve content words, such as nouns and verbs, developing into new function words that express grammatical relationships among other words in a sentence. Le terme grammaticalisation désigne, dans l'évolution d'une langue à une autre ou dans l'histoire d'une langue déjà formée, un changement linguistique consistant en la transformation d'une entité autonome, le plus souvent un mot à sens lexical, en morphème grammatical. La grammaticalisation est un processus graduel et de longue durée, se manifestant par plusieurs phénomènes. L'entité initiale perd partiellement ou totalement son contenu notionnel, son sens lexical ou d'une autre nature, ses propriétés syntaxiques, sa forme sonore d'origine et ses propriétés prosodiques, donc son autonomie, devenant, en tant que mot-outil ou affixe, dépendante d'un mot autonome. En même temps, elle devient partiellement ou totalement abstraite, acquiert un sens grammatical et devient obligatoire. Certaines entités grammaticalisées apparaissent tantôt comme des mots à part, tantôt comme des affixes. En synchronie, c'est-à-dire dans l'état de la langue à un moment donné, des entités différentes présentent des degrés différents de grammaticalisation.
