Beim Menschen und den meisten Primaten ist sie durch den opponierbaren Daumen mit dem Musculus opponens pollicis ausgezeichnet, was den Pinzettengriff ermöglicht (Greifhand). Die Hand wird unterteilt in die Handwurzel (Carpus), die Mittelhand (Metacarpus) und die Finger (Digiti manus). Bei den anderen Landwirbeltieren wird zumeist die Bezeichnung Vorderfuß verwendet, die Untergliederung dann entsprechend Vorderfußwurzel, Vordermittelfuß und Vorderzehen.
