Herbert S. Gutowsky

Herbert S. Gutowsky was an American chemist and university teacher born in Bridgman in 1919. He worked in the fields of physical chemistry and chemistry, serving as an employee of the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign. His academic background included studies at the University of California, Berkeley, Indiana University, and Harvard University, where his doctoral advisor was George Kistiakowsky.

Gutowsky received several prestigious honors, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, the National Medal of Science, the Wolf Prize in Chemistry, and the Irving Langmuir Award in Chemical Physics. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. He died in Urbana on January 13, 2000.
