Joseph J. Kohn

Joseph J. Kohn was a male mathematician, pedagogue, and university teacher born in Prague in 1932. He held citizenship in the United States and Czechoslovakia and spoke English and Czech. Educated at Brooklyn Technical High School and Princeton University, he served as a university teacher at Princeton University and Harvard University. His doctoral advisor was Donald C. Spencer, and his doctoral student was David Catlin.

Kohn’s field of work included mathematics, differential operators, and complex analysis. He received the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Leroy P. Steele Prize, and the Stefan Bergman Prize. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Mathematical Society. He is recognized in the American Academy Arts Sciences collection.

Kohn had three children and was the sibling of Miloš Forman. He died in Princeton in 2023. His given name was Josef or Joseph, and his name in his native language was Josef Kohn.
