OverviewAI-generated
Malaria is an endemic disease classified as a parasitic protozoa infectious disease and vector-borne disease. It is caused by Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium ovale, with Anopheles serving as its natural reservoir. Poverty acts as a contributing factor to the condition. The disease has a minimal incubation period in humans of 7.
Clinical manifestations include intermittent fever, hepatomegaly, anemia, and splenomegaly. Diagnosis involves medical examinations such as blood film analysis, optical microscope usage, and polymerase chain reaction. Health specialties managing the disease include infectious diseases, tropical medicine, and parasitology. Treatments utilize drugs such as chloroquine, (RS)-primaquine, hydroxychloroquine, and mefloquine. Genetic associations involve ABO and ATP2B4.
The condition has been described by sources including the Armenian Soviet Encyclopedia, Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary, and Encyclopædia Britannica 11th edition. Ronald Ross and Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran are credited as discoverers. Reported statistics indicate 500,000,000 cases and 627,000 deaths, with a disease burden of 216,000,000.
