There are at least two separate artists to have recorded under the name of Man Ray. 1) The duo of Phil Murphy and New Order's Peter Hook who released the acid house inspired 4 track single Summer 88 in March 2010. 2) An acoustic duet formed by Hilda Lizarazu and Roberto "Tito"Losavio, later joined by Laura Gómez (bass) and Pablo Buratti (drums). Read more on Last.fm

Quotes

 • I have finally freed myself from the sticky medium of paint, and am working directly with light itself.
 • One of the satisfactions of a genius is his will-power and obstinacy.
 • It has never been my object to record my dreams, just the determination to realize them.
 • There is no progress in art, any more than there is progress in making love. There are simply different ways of doing it.
 • A creator needs only one enthusiast to justify him.
 • Of course, there will always be those who look only at technique, who ask "how", while others of a more curious nature will ask "why". Personally, I have always preferred inspiration to information.

Encyclopedic overview

Man Ray (born Emmanuel Radnitzky; August 27, 1890 – November 18, 1976) was an American-born, French-naturalized visual artist who spent most of his career in Paris. He was a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements, although his ties to each were informal. He produced major works in a variety of media but considered himself a painter above all. He was a photography innovator as well as a fashion and portrait photographer, and is noted for his work with photograms, which he called "rayographs" in reference to himself.
