Er wurde bekannt als Bebop- und Hard-Bop-Musiker, der mit den bedeutendsten Jazzmusikern wie Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis und Sonny Rollins aufgetreten ist.
