The name literally means 'porridge from Mulgimaa (an area in southern Estonia)'; the word 'porridge' comes from Proto-Finnic *putro (cf. Finish puuro 'porridge'), and the modifier is the genitive of 'a person from Mulgimaa', derived from Latvian , 'idiot, fool'.
