Multiple sclerosis is a disease where the body's immune system damages the protective coating (called myelin) around nerve fibers, which disrupts communication between the brain and the rest of the body. It matters because this damage can lead to a range of physical and cognitive symptoms that affect a person's ability to move, see, and think clearly.
