Die Stadt Paderborn ([paːdɐˈbɔɐ̯n] ) ist mit über 150.000 Einwohnern eine Großstadt im östlichen Teil des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen. Sie liegt im gleichnamigen Kreis und ist dessen Kreisstadt, ist Universitätsstadt, Oberzentrum und Mittelpunkt der Region Hochstift Paderborn. Der Name weist auf die Quellen der Pader im heutigen Stadtzentrum hin. Erstmals wurde Paderborn in einer Urkunde im Jahr 777 erwähnt, als unter Karl dem Großen in Paderborn ein Reichstag und eine Missionssynode stattfanden. In Paderborn wurde 1614 die erste westfälische Universität gegründet, die später zur selbstständigen Theologischen Fakultät umgewandelt wurde. Eine neue Universität wurde 1972 gegründet; bereits 1971 entstand die Kath. Hochschule NRW. Seit dem neunten Jahrhundert ist die Stadt Sitz eines Bistums; dieses wurde 1930 zum Erzbistum erhoben. Ihre heutigen Grenzen erhielt die Stadt durch die Eingliederung umliegender Gemeinden im Zuge der Gebietsreform in Nordrhein-Westfalen von 1974, wodurch Paderborn zur Großstadt wurde. Heute steht Paderborn auf Platz 56 der größten Städte Deutschlands.
