Simoom /Saimum( samūm; from the root s-m-m, "to poison") is a strong, hot, dry, dust-laden wind. The word is generally used to describe a local wind that blows in the Sahara, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, and the deserts of Arabian Peninsula. Its temperature may exceed and the relative humidity may fall below 10%.

Samum (z arab. samma = ‘truć’), chamsin, hamsin – gwałtowny, suchy i gorący południowy wiatr wiejący na pustyniach Afryki Północnej i Półwyspu Arabskiego oraz w ich sąsiedztwie. Samumy wywołują i piaskowe. Występują najczęściej w okresie od kwietnia do czerwca. Zazwyczaj krótkotrwały, trwa 12-20 minut. Występuje przed nadejściem frontu chłodnego. Niesie bardzo duże ilości piasku i pyłu. W trakcie samumu temperatura silnie wzrasta (do 50 °C), zaś wilgotność spada do około 10%.
