Soest (gesprochen [zoːst] mit Dehnungs-e; , westfälisch Saust) ist die Kreisstadt des gleichnamigen Kreises im Regierungsbezirk Arnsberg in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Auf halbem Wege zwischen Dortmund und Paderborn, in der fruchtbaren Soester Börde, leben in der Stadt 47.929 Einwohner (31. Dezember 2021). Neben der Kernstadt mit mehr als 40.000 Einwohnern verteilt sich die übrige Bevölkerung auf die umliegenden Stadtteile.
