This gene encodes a protein tyrosine phosphatase that plays a key role in the regulation of actin filaments. The encoded protein dephosphorylates and activates cofilin, which promotes actin filament depolymerization. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. El homólogo 2 de la proteína fosfatasa Slingshot es una enzima que en humanos está codificada por el gen SSH2 . ​ ​ ​ La familia ADF (factor despolimerizante de actina)/cofilina (ver MIM 601442) está compuesta por mediadores de la dinámica de actina que responden a estímulos. Las proteínas ADF/cofilina son inactivadas por quinasas como el dominio LIM quinasa-1 (LIMK1; MIM 601329).
