1994 American animated musical fantasy film directed by Richard Rich
The Swan Princess is a 1994 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Nest Entertainment and Rich Animation Studios, and loosely based on Tchaikovsky's 1877 ballet Swan Lake. Starring the voices of Michelle Nicastro, Howard McGillin, Jack Palance, John Cleese, Steven Wright, Steve Vinovich, and Sandy Duncan, the film was written by Brian Nissen, scored by Lex de Azevedo, and co-produced and directed by former Disney animation director Richard Rich. The film was theatrically released in the United States on November 18, 1994, by New Line Cinema; it was distributed by Columbia TriStar Film Distributors International in foreign markets. The film received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $9.8 million against a $21 million budget, becoming a box-office bomb, mostly due to struggling competition with the release of Disney's The Lion King (1994). The film later became popular through home video releases, and has since been followed by a series of direct-to-video sequels starting in 1997.
The film's theme song "Far Longer than Forever", written by Azevedo and David Zippel and performed by Regina Belle and Jeffrey Osborne, was nominated for Best Original Song at the 52nd Golden Globes ceremony in 1995.
