自贡市是中华人民共和国四川省下辖的地级市，位于四川省中部偏南。市境东临泸州市，南接宜宾市，西邻乐山市，北界内江市。地处四川盆地南部低山丘陵区，沱江纵贯市境东部，于东南部与釜溪河汇合，岷江支流越溪河流经西部。总面积4,372平方公里，人口277.02万。 自贡市是国家历史文化名城，有“千年盐都”、“恐龙之乡”、“南国灯城”和“美食之府”之称，为中华民国最早建制的二十个市之一，四川省最早的省辖市和工业重镇，现已发展为一座百万城市人口的大城市。自贡是世界地质公园、国家历史文化名城、中国优秀旅游城市、国家园林城市、对外开放城市、国家知识产权试点城市、国家卫生城市、国家级重点保护古生物化石集中产地、全国首批老工业城市和资源型城市产业转型升级示范区、省区域中心城市、川南区域中心城市。 自贡市具有两千年的盐业历史。自贡市因盐而得名－－自贡其实就是自流井和贡井两个著名产盐区的合称。举凡交通、运输、商业、金融、文化、教育、卫生、市政，以及城市的职业构成、社会意识、政治风云、生活方式等，无不深刻地打上盐业经济的烙印。正是盐塑造了自贡这座城市。自贡盐业生产起源于东汉章帝年间，素有「千年盐都」美称，一度成为中国井矿盐的中心和最大的手工工场。自贡市也是世界上最早开发利用天然气的地方。自贡因盐业的鼎盛而「富庶甲于蜀中」，被誉为「川省精华之地」，曾经为中国最富庶的城市之一，也为抗日战争中捐款额度全国最高的城市，记录于国民政府军方资料中，釜溪河北岸的石刻“还我河山”就是当年国军将领冯玉祥为自贡富商捐款之善举所题写。中华人民共和国建立后，自贡市成为三线建设中重要的化工城市。在“2013年中国城市竞争力排行榜——上市公司视角下的城市排名”中，自贡市位列市级行政区中成长竞争力前十强的第一位。
