L'acetone (anche chiamato propanone o dimetilchetone) è il chetone più semplice. La sua formula chimica è CH3-CO-CH3; l'atomo di carbonio a cui è legato l'atomo di ossigeno ha ibridazione sp2 e si trova al centro di un triangolo (approssimativamente equilatero) i cui vertici sono costituiti dall'atomo di ossigeno e dagli altri due atomi di carbonio. L'angolo CCC è un po' minore di 120° perché, dato che la densità elettronica in un doppio legame è maggiore che in un legame semplice, la richiesta di spazio angolare del doppio legame è un po' maggiore di quella del legame semplice, in accordo alla teoria VSEPR . Similmente accade nel fosgene e nell'etene. L'acetone è un liquido mobile, incolore, volatile e infiammabile con caratteristico odore etereo, ma un po' aspro; è completamente solubile in acqua, etanolo ed etere e trova principalmente impiego come solvente di uso generale e come solvente polare aprotico (μ = 2,91 D).
