Antonín Zápotocký was the son of Ladislav Zápotocký, a pioneer in the Czech workers' movement. In December 1920 he ranked among the chief organizers of a general strike in the Kladno region and participated in an attempt at a left-wing coup. In the course of the twenties he belonged to Smeral's group in the leadership of the Czechoslovak Communist Party (CCP).
