Member species are native to the Caucasus, Iran and Turkey, living in forest and grassy habitats with numerous rock outcrops. Among rock lizards, seven parthenogenetic species are known.

Caucasius „kaukaski”, od Caucasus „Kaukaz”, od gr. Καυκασος Kaukasos „Kaukaz”; łac. lacerta „jaszczurka”[2]. Gatunek typowy: Lacerta saxicola Eversmann, 1834. Podział systematyczny Rodzaj ten jest znany przede wszystkim pod nazwą Darevskia, wprowadzoną przez Oscara Arribasa w swojej pracy doktorskiej w 1997 roku, a także w artykule naukowym w „Russian Journal of Herpetology” w 1999 roku. Praca doktorska nie spełniała jednak wymogów Międzynarodowego Kodeksu Nomenklatury Zoologicznej, nazwa Darevskia nie została więc wówczas prawidłowo utworzona, w przeciwieństwie do artykułu z 1999 roku[4]. W międzyczasie jednak ukazał się artykuł autorstwa Harrisa i współpracowników (1998), w którym ta sama grupa jaszczurek otrzymała nazwę Caucasilacerta[2]. Niektórzy późniejsi autorzy uznawali również tę nazwę za nieprawidłowo ustanowioną[5], z czym jednak nie zgodzili

Darevskia is a genus of lizards of the family Lacertidae known colloquially as rock lizards or meadow lizards. Member species are native to the Caucasus, Iran and Turkey, living in forest and grassy habitats with numerous rock outcrops. Among rock lizards, seven parthenogenetic species are known.
==Description== Darevskia species are small lizards with a head and body length of , and with a tail length about two times longer. The body is usually flattened, the head is pointed in shape and in most species flattened in a vertical plane, which allows lizards to hide in narrow crevices between stones and rocks. Rock lizards have relatively long legs with special calluses on the inner surfaces of the paws and sharp claws, thanks to which they quickly move along the vertical rough surfaces of rocks and stones.
