Las plumas son estructuras queratinosas de la piel de las aves y otros dinosaurios terópodos. Son los apéndices integumentarios (escamas, pelos, cuernos, etc) de estructura más compleja entre los vertebrados. El conjunto de todas las plumas de un ave recibe el nombre de plumaje, y forma una capa densa, aislante, que la protege frente al frío y el agua, contribuyendo a la termorregulación de estos animales. Las plumas tienen terminaciones nerviosas y generan dolor al ser cortadas. Son fundamentales en el vuelo aviar, pues forman la superficie sustentadora del ala. Las plumas tienen también otras funciones relacionadas con su color y su vistosidad, como el camuflaje, el reconocimiento entre los miembros de la misma especie y la comunicación entre ellos, la diferenciación de sexos y como elemento de atracción sexual durante el cortejo.
