Das Osteosarkom, auch osteogenes Sarkom genannt, ist der häufigste primäre bösartige Knochentumor, im Volksmund häufig, aber medizinisch nicht ganz korrekt, als „Knochenkrebs“ bezeichnet. Seine proliferierenden Zellen sind fähig, Knochen und Osteoid (unverkalkte Knochengrundsubstanz) zu bilden. Das Osteosarkom zeichnet sich durch aggressives Wachstum mit Zerstörung des umliegenden Knochens und gegebenenfalls Gelenks aus. Es metastasiert frühzeitig über die Blutbahn (hämatogen) in die Lunge. Zum Zeitpunkt der Diagnosestellung haben bereits 20 % der Patienten Metastasen und geschätzt etwa weitere 60 % nicht sichtbare Mikrometastasen.
