Common saltmarsh grass grows on salt marshes, is tolerant to saltwater flooding, yet has a definitely sweet flavor! No wonder that grazers, including barnacle geese, brent geese and wigeon, are very fond of it. It also has a relatively high caloric value. Common saltmarsh grass is commonly found along the Dutch coast, especially in the wadden and delta regions. A major portion of the grass mat in the lower parts of the marshes is made up of this species. It grows best on clay soil, however it is also found on sandy beach plains. Although the grass can also produce seeds, on the lower parts of the marsh it generally doesn't get the chance due to flooding and grazing. There it uses primarily root suckers to reproduce.
