Der Blutpython (Python brongersmai) zählt zur Familie der Pythons (Pythonidae) und wird dort in die Gattung der Eigentlichen Pythons (Python) gestellt. Er ist eine stark gedrungene Schlange mit kurzem Schwanz. Viele Tiere zeigen rote Farbtöne, wovon sich der deutsche Name ableitet. Blutpythons leben in den Tropen Südostasiens. Ursprünglich bewohnte die Art dort feuchte Regenwälder und Sümpfe, ist heute aber auch häufig auf Ölpalmplantagen zu finden. Seine nächsten Verwandten sind der Sumatra-Kurzschwanzpython und der Borneo-Kurzschwanzpython.
