Soft Machine es un grupo musical británico de rock formado en 1966, que junto a Caravan definió el llamado «sonido Canterbury». Durante su inestable e intensa carrera (con más de 15 miembros en poco más de una década) pasaron por la psicodelia y el rock progresivo para finalmente desembocar en el jazz fusion, siendo pioneros en los tres géneros. Fue fundado en 1966 por el guitarrista Daevid Allen, el teclista Mike Ratledge, el cantante/bajista Kevin Ayers y el cantante/baterista Robert Wyatt. Su nombre proviene de la novela de William Burroughs The Soft Machine (La Máquina Suave, 1961).
