Trabzon is a city on Turkey's Black Sea coast with roots going back to ancient Greek colonization in 756 BC, making it one of the region's historically significant settlements. The city gained particular importance as the capital of the Empire of Trebizond, a major Byzantine successor state that existed after the Fourth Crusade, until it fell under Ottoman control in 1461.
