I principali organismi pluricellulari appartengono tipicamente ai regni animale, vegetale e dei funghi. Le cellule degli organismi unicellulari presentano caratteri morfologici solitamente uniformi. Con l'aumentare del numero di cellule di un organismo, invece, le cellule che lo compongono si differenziano in forma, grandezza, rapporti e funzioni specializzate, fino alla costituzione di tessuti ed organi.
