L'etere dietilico, altrimenti noto come etere etilico, dietiletere o etossietano è il più comune degli eteri alifatici (formula CH3-CH2-O-CH2-CH3, spesso abbreviata Et2O). A temperatura ambiente si presenta come un liquido incolore, molto mobile, dall'odore caratteristico, detto etereo per antonomasia. È un composto estremamente volatile (Teb. = 34 °C) e infiammabile, nocivo, ottimo solvente di grassi. È completamente miscibile con etere di petrolio, benzene e idrocarburi in genere e gli altri solventi eterei THF e diossano, con alcool, acetone, acetato di etile, acetonitrile, piridina, con i solventi clorurati cloroformio e diclorometano; pertanto, e in quanto praticamente inerte alle basi anche forti (e resistente pure agli acidi diluiti) e per la sua scarsa reattività in genere, viene comunemente utilizzato come solvente di uso generale in chimica organica e organometallica. È praticamente immiscibile con formammide, glicol e glicerina. In laboratorio chimico, dove di solito è chiamato semplicemente "etere", è usato comunemente per via della sua modesta polarità (μ = 1,15 D; εr = 4,3) e scarsa miscibilità con l'acqua (6,05 g/100 mL), cose che lo rendono particolarmente adatto per sciogliere sostanze organiche poco polari o apolari. Inoltre, la sua elevata volatilità ne facilita di molto la rimozione.
