Equus è un genere di mammiferi perissodattili, appartenenti alla famiglia Equidae, sottofamiglia , tribù Equini. È l'unico genere ancora vivente della famiglia. Il genere comprende diverse specie, di cui molte estinte e due domesticate: il cavallo, da cui deriva il cavallo domestico (Equus ferus caballus), l'asino selvatico africano, da cui deriva l'asino domestico (Equus africanus asinus) e i loro ibridi sterili (mulo e bardotto). È dimostrato che le specie domestiche sono in grado di ritornare alla vita selvatica con successo. Un esempio sono i cavallini della Giara. La popolazione più estesa di cavalli inselvatichiti si trova nel West nordamericano, dove sono indicati come mustang.
