Le francium, connu pendant un temps sous les noms d'éka-césium et actinium K, est l'élément chimique de numéro atomique 87, de symbole Fr. C'est un métal alcalin radioactif de masse atomique 223. Il a été nommé en hommage à la France par Marguerite Perey. C'est le second élément le plus rare parmi les 92 premiers éléments de la classification périodique, après l’astate : il n'en existerait qu'une trentaine de grammes dans la croûte terrestre. Cette rareté est due à son existence transitoire, en tant que produit de désintégration de l'actinium. La demi-vie de l'isotope le plus stable 223Fr est de 22 minutes, puis il se transforme lui-même en radium par désintégration bêta ou en astate par rayonnement alpha. Cette double radioactivité contribue au fait que l'astate est encore plus rare que le francium, même si l'astate 210 a une demi-vie supérieure (8,1 h) à celle du francium 223. L’astate peut également provenir de l’uranium ou du thorium, donc le fait que le francium ne se transforme pas intégralement en astate n’a que peu de rapport avec leur rareté relative. En effet : * d'une part, la plus grande part (99,994 %) des désintégrations du francium 223 donnent le radium 223 par désintégration bêta moins, et, seulement 0,006 % donnent l'astate 219 par désintégration alpha, * d'autre part, l'astate 219 a une période de 56 s donc la contribution de l'astate 219 ainsi formé à l'astate total (majoritairement l'astate 210 - période 8,1 heure) est faible, * d'autre part, le radium 223 (période 11,43 jours) donne le radon 219 par désintégration alpha, lequel radon 219 (période 3,96 s) donne par désintégration alpha le polonium 215 (période 1,78×10−3 s), lequel polonium 215 donne majoritairement (99,99 %) le plomb 211 (période 36,1 min) par désintégration alpha, lequel plomb 211 donne le bismuth 211 (période 2,15 min), lequel bismuth 211 donne le thallium 207 (période 4,78 min) sans passer par l'astate ; seulement 0,01 % des désintégrations du polonium 215 donnent l'astate 215 (période 10−4 s) donc la contribution de l'astate 215 ainsi formée à l'astate total est également très faible. On peut voir ainsi que la contribution du francium 223 à l'astate présent sur la Terre est faible. Le francium a été découvert en 1939 à l'Institut Curie de Paris par Marguerite Perey, en purifiant du lanthane contenant de l'actinium. Il s'agit du dernier élément découvert d'abord dans la nature, avant d'être synthétisé (certains éléments, tel le technétium, ont été découverts dans la nature après avoir été synthétisés en laboratoire).
