Isethionsäure (2-Hydroxyethansulfonsäure) ist die einfachste hydroxygruppenhaltige Alkansulfonsäure. Sie eignet sich wegen ihrer hohen Polarität und der relativ guten Löslichkeit ihrer Erdalkalimetallsalze zur Veresterung mit langkettigen Carbonsäuren zu Isethionaten (Acyloxyethansulfonaten), die als anionische Tenside eingesetzt werden.
