El metilfenidato (MFD) es una droga psicoestimulante aprobada para el tratamiento del trastorno por déficit de atención con hiperactividad (TDAH), la narcolepsia y el síndrome de taquicardia ortostática postural. También puede ser prescrito fuera de etiqueta para casos de síndrome de fatiga crónica y depresión resistentes a otros tratamientos. El metilfenidato es un derivado de la piperidina, que incrementa los niveles de dopamina y norepinefrina en el cerebro por la inhibición de recaptación de los respectivos transportadores de monoaminas. No presenta el efecto adicional de activación de dichos receptores y la consecuente segregación de ambas catecolaminas presente en las anfetaminas.
