Sem (hebräisch שֵׁם, griechisch Σημ, arabisch سام Sām, DMG Sām) ist nach biblischer Überlieferung der älteste der drei Söhne Noahs (Genesis 5,32 ), aus denen nach der Völkertafel der Genesis alle heutigen Völker der Menschheit hervorgegangen sein sollen. Nach 1. Mose 9,20-26 wurden er und sein Bruder Japhet durch einen besonderen Segen seines Vaters ausgezeichnet, während Hams Sohn Kanaan von Noah verflucht wurde. In Gen 9,21 wird erzählt, dass Ham seinen betrunkenen Vater Noah zuvor nackt „sah“, wobei sehen wahrscheinlich als Euphemismus für eine moralisch verwerfliche Handlung zu verstehen ist. Nachdem Sem und Jafet davon erfuhren, deckten sie den Vater zu, indem sie rückwärtsgehend sein Zelt betraten, um nicht auch dessen Nacktheit zu sehen. Sems Brüder hießen Ham (oder auch Cham) und Jafet (oder auch Japhet).
