Ils parlent une langue berbère, le tamajeq, et utilisent un alphabet appelé tifinagh (prononcé en français tifinar). Ils occupent la plus grande des régions berbérophones. Souvent nomades, leur sédentarisation s'accélère depuis la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Ils sont confrontés à des formes d'assimilation culturelle et linguistique (acculturation) et à une (de) qui les ont conduits à la lutte armée dans les années 1990.
