Ab 1920 studierte sie in Köln und Heidelberg Geschichte, Kunstgeschichte und Sinologie. 1924 promovierte sie an der Philosophischen Fakultät in Heidelberg zum Thema „Jude und Judentum im Werke Rembrandts“. 1925 heiratete Anna Seghers den ungarischen Schriftsteller und Soziologen László Radvanyi, mit dem sie in Berlin lebte und zwei Kinder bekam. Seghers trat 1928 der Kommunistischen Partei Deutschlands (KPD) bei und war im Jahr darauf Gründungsmitglied des „Bundes proletarisch-revolutionärer Schriftsteller“. Wegen ihrer Parteizugehörigkeit und ihrer jüdischen Abstammung floh sie 1933 über die Schweiz nach Paris, sieben Jahre später in den noch unbesetzten Teil Frankreichs. 1935 war sie eine der Gründerinnen des „Schutzverbandes Deutscher Schriftsteller“ in Paris. 1940 emigrierte sie nach Mexiko. Im Exil arbeitete sie an Zeitschriften deutscher Emigranten mit, unter anderem war sie Mitglied der Redaktion der „Neuen Deutschen Blätter“. 1947 kehrte Seghers nach Deutschland zurück und ließ sich in Ostberlin nieder. In der Exilliteratur spielte sie nicht nur als Organisatorin eine wichtige Rolle, sondern schrieb mit „Das siebte Kreuz“ und „Transit“ auch zwei der literarisch bedeutendsten Romane dieser Zeit. Anna Seghers hat für ihr schriftstellerisches Schaffen zahlreiche Preise und Auszeichnungen erhalten. She was notable for exploring and depicting the moral experience of the Second World War. Born into a Jewish family and married to a Hungarian Communist, Seghers escaped Nazi-controlled territory through wartime France. She was granted a visa and gained ship's passage to Mexico, where she lived in Mexico City (1941–47).
