La 3,4-metilenediossimetanfetamina, più comunemente nota come MDMA o Ecstasy (talvolta chiamata anche MD, XTC, Molly) è una sostanza psicoattiva appartenente alla classe delle feniletilamine, dagli spiccati effetti stimolanti ed entactogeni, anche se non propriamente psichedelici. È un composto semisintetico ottenuto comunemente a partire dal safrolo, uno degli olii essenziali presenti nel sassofrasso, nella noce moscata, nella vaniglia, nella radice di acoro, e in diverse altre spezie vegetali. Diffusasi a partire dagli anni novanta nella scena rave, rappresenta uno dei più diffusi stupefacenti che viene assunto generalmente sotto forma di pastiglie o cristalli, disciolti in liquidi o meno comunemente fumati. L'abuso può comportare rischi per la salute, sia fisica sia cerebrale con evidenze sperimentali di neurotossicità. È attualmente oggetto di ricerca in ambito psichiatrico, come adiuvante per la psicoterapia in particolare per il disturbo post traumatico (PTSD), al 2018 non ha alcun uso medico approvato ma negli USA è prevista la legalizzazione nella psicoterapia assistita per il 2021. È una sostanza illegale e controllata al pari di altri stupefacenti.
