Stendhal, pseudoniem van Marie-Henri Beyle (Grenoble, 23 januari 1783 – Parijs, 23 maart 1842) was een 19e-eeuwse Franse romantische schrijver die in zijn werk zowel romantische als realistische invloeden verenigde. Zijn bekendste romans zijn Le Rouge et le Noir, Lucien Leuwen en La Chartreuse de Parme, die alle drie autobiografische elementen bevatten. De hoofdfiguren vertonen karakteristieken van Stendhal zelf. Zijn romans worden gekenmerkt door een vrij droge, korte stijl, mede door het feit dat Stendhal gekant was tegen elke vorm van literaire bladvulling.
