Robert Robinson

Robert Robinson (1886–1975) was a British chemist and university teacher. He specialized in organic chemistry and earned a doctorate under William Henry Perkin at the University of Manchester. His academic career included positions at Magdalen College, the University of Liverpool, the University of Manchester, and the University of London. He also worked as a mountaineer and chess player.

Robinson received the Copley Medal, the Royal Medal, and the Faraday Lectureship Prize, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. His memberships included the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. He died in Great Missenden and is buried at Kensal Green Cemetery. His doctoral students included John Cornforth, Arthur Birch, and Alexander R. Todd.
