Reserpin ist ein Indolalkaloid einiger Pflanzen aus der Gruppe der Schlangenwurze, welches vor allem über die Rauvolfia serpentina aus der indischen Heilkunst Eingang in die westliche Medizin fand. Dort wurde es zu einem jener Arzneistoffe, mit denen die Ära der modernen Psychopharmakologie begann. Zuerst in der Psychiatrie als Neuroleptikum bei Schizophrenie eingesetzt, erlangte es insbesondere als Mittel gegen Bluthochdruck große Bedeutung. Während ihm infolge der Erforschung seines Wirkmechanismus nach wie vor ein hoher Stellenwert in der neurochemischen Forschung zukommt, hat es seine klinische Bedeutung heutzutage zum größten Teil eingebüßt. Nach der Einführung wesentlich effizienterer Medikamente ist Reserpin nicht mehr ein Mittel der Wahl.
