Las cubiertas vegetales se construyen artesanalmente realizando una cubierta con vegetación seca como paja, carrizo, juncia, junco y brezo y colocándola en capas, de forma que el agua se elimine lejos de la cubierta interna. Probablemente sea este el material más antiguo que se ha utilizado en tejados, usándose tanto en climas tropicales como templados. Algunos constructores de países en vías de desarrollo aún utilizan las cubiertas vegetales, construyéndolas normalmente con vegetación de la zona y de bajo coste. Como contraste, en algunos países desarrollados existe una demanda de este tipo de cubierta, por parte de ciudadanos acomodados que quieren dar a su hogar un aire rústico.
