Esiste in diverse forme allotropiche, di cui una stabile dall'aspetto grigio e simile ad un metallo; in questa forma il selenio possiede una resistenza elettrica inferiore quando è esposto alla luce, pertanto trova impiego nella realizzazione delle fotocellule. In natura si trova in minerali costituiti da solfuri come, ad esempio, la pirite.
